New Toyota Tundra 2022: Review

Toyota has introduced a new generation Tundra pickup truck. The car was built on the TNGA-F platform, which is used by the Land Cruiser 300 SUV. In the US, sales of the car will begin before the end of this year. It will compete for customers with the segment leaders in the American market – Ford F-150 and Ram 1500. The current Toyota Tundra is even older than the Land Cruiser 200 SUV : the second-generation pickup truck entered the assembly line 15 years ago, in November 2006. During this time, the main American competitors in the face of trucks Ford and Chevrolet were seriously modernized several times, and Ram generally separated from Dodge and turned into a separate brand.

Tundra sales in the States have been declining for several years while pickups of the big three find 500-600 thousand buyers annually. But Toyota does not intend to leave this segment.

The new pickup was fully developed in the United States by engineering centers in Michigan, Arizona and California. The design changes are evolutionary. The Calty design studio was responsible for the appearance of the model , and the style in which the pickup is sustained was called Technical muscle.

The rear of the car has springs instead of springs, and the default motor is a 3.4 biturbo-six.

The basic Tundra has analog devices on the front panel , and the touchscreen of the new multimedia system (it has received voice control and remote update functions ) has a diagonal of eight inches. Top-end versions have richer equipment: a virtual “tidy” with a diagonal of 12.3 inches, and a 14-inch touchscreen infotainment system (the largest in its class).

The pickup is the brand ‘s first model with the latest Audio Multimedia system developed by the Toyota Connected Technologies team in Texas. The complex has a built-in voice assistant and the ability to save driver profiles in the cloud. So, you can take with you not only your musical preferences, but also the air conditioning settings, and then load them into another car with an identical complex.

Some of the pickup functions can be controlled directly from a smartphone. The car also knows how to distribute Wi-Fi to ten devices, and the Apple CarPlay and Android Auto protocols are standard for all versions of the pickup.

There is a storage compartment under the rear sofa. The list of options includes a panoramic roof, heated steering wheel, and ventilation for the front seats. The initial versions now have a complex of safety systems Toyota Safety Sense 2.5. The complex prevents collisions with cars, pedestrians and cyclists, including when cornering and when reversing.

There is an automatic high beam, a lane keeping system, blind spot monitoring and adaptive cruise control. The third tundra finally “lost” its cheap modifications with a short cockpit.

The car has two four-door variants: Double Cab and CrewMax. The first can be ordered with a body length of 1981 or 2469 mm. The second – 1676 or 1981. Carrying capacity – up to 880 kg. The maximum allowable weight for towing is 5442 kg – 816 more than its predecessor.

From the Limited version, the cab will be hydraulically attached to the frame. The new frame is much stiffer than the old one: all elements are box-section, cross-members are made twice as thick as before. The springs in the rear suspension of the Tundra were replaced by springs, and the front axle was equipped with a new suspension with double wishbones. Two-tube shock absorbers are installed in a circle . Toyota promises that the pickup has become more comfortable and better controlled, and body roll has been reduced by about a quarter.

The TNGA-F platform also made it possible to equip the novelty with adaptive shock absorbers and multi-link rear air suspension. The ride height can be adjusted manually or rely on automation (positions Normal, Low and High are provided ). This will be useful not only off-road, but also when working with trailers – by selecting the body height, the system will achieve an optimal balance.

The TRD Sport package features a lowered coil suspension, while the TRD Off-Road package includes Bilstein monotube shocks, off-road drive electronics modes , Crawl Control and a rear differential lock. Toyota’s special pride is the performance of the TRD Pro.

The all-wheel-drive pickup features inverted 2.5-inch FOX shocks, reinforced anti-roll bar, extra underbody protection, off-road tires and 28mm higher ground clearance charged version of TRD Pro, can be recognized by the plastic overlays on the arches, ventilation slots in the hood, a different design of the wheels and an additional front lighting unit.

This Tundra is based on an uncontested gasoline – electric unit i-Force Max with a capacity of 443 horsepower and 790 newton-meters: it consists of a 3.4-liter gasoline “six” and an electric motor built between the engine and a 10-band automatic.

The electric motor powers, the Nickel-metal-hydride traction battery is installed under the rear sofa (for conventional gasoline versions there is a “trunk”) and operates with a voltage of 288 volts: its capacity is not specified, but it is known that a pickup can travel up to 29 kilometers on electricity alone . Traction can be sent to the rear axle or to all wheels at once, depending on the modification.

Like the Land Cruiser, the Toyota Tundra pickup has lost the classic V8 engine, and now it has the same V6 3.4 petrol biturbo engine that the TRD pro version, which received the name i-Force without the max. It produces 394 hp. and 649 Nm instead of 386 hp. and 544 Nm from the former “eight”. A pair for it is called a ten-speed “automatic”.

Drive – rear or rigidly connected full with a reduction gear. In the entry-level SR and SR5 trim levels, the new Tundra is offered with a petrol engine without an electric attachment. As an alternative, the i-Force Max hybrid installation is proposed.This unit will be available only for the Limited, Platinum, 1794 Edition and TRD Pro versions . The tundra has received a useful Trailer Back Guidance system, which will help when maneuvering with a trailer, and a Straight Path Assist complex, which will make it easier to reverse in a straight line.

The pickup also has several special cameras for additional control over the cargo. And special LED lamps are built into the mirror housings – they illuminate the trailer behind the truck in the dark.

As before, the production of the car will be established at the company’s factory in Texas. The third generation Toyota Tundra will be available to order at the end of 2021.
